ISO 19650 is an international series of standards that regulates BIM-based information management throughout the entire lifecycle of built assets. It defines the expected processes, document types, roles, and rules for collaboration. Operating in accordance with ISO 19650 proves that an organization is capable of managing project and operational data in a structured, transparent, and efficient manner.

ISO 19650-2 primarily focuses on information management during the design and construction phases, while ISO 19650-3 regulates data management related to operations. The former supports project delivery, whereas the latter supports the use and maintenance of the building throughout its entire lifecycle.

The parts of the preparation include, among others:

– review of current documentation and processes,
– development of manuals, templates, and audit plans,
– conducting executive, expert, and awareness-raising training sessions,
– conducting an internal audit,
– full representation during the certification process,
– as well as three-year system maintenance support covering the entire certification cycle.

Possessing the certification is a clear market differentiator: it increases the chances of winning tenders, builds trust with clients, and proves that your organization is capable of handling large-scale, complex BIM projects in a standardized and transparent manner. • And why do we recommend UNI/PdR 74:2019 instead?

The ISO 19650 standards – including the ISO 19650-2 and ISO 19650-3 parts – are not management system standards, and therefore cannot be certified for corporate operations. These are so-called product standards, which:

• define the rules and framework for the creation,
• handover,
• storage,
• and documentation of BIM-based information.

The “ISO 19650 certificates”; that occasionally appear on the market in reality only verify the formal and content compliance of documents – they do not certify the operation of the company and do not qualify an accredited management system.
